For the record, I ran a path which skirts just below the summit but saw no-one on the top (it was misty & i have to admit i didn't look very hard), ran on and then realised i hadn't gone to the top. I turned round & ran to the top (much to the confusion of runners behind me), only to discover there was no summit marshal. Set off on the course again, only to find the marsal a little bit further on along the course (but NOT on the summit). The whole process cost me several minutes and more than 10 places. I managed to regain some of the place, but still lost five which was a shame as i had a very good run (running all the way up fan y big) and was on for a top 10 finish & hence a mention in "The Fellrunner".
Still, it could have been worse, a well known lady fell runner who was just ahead of me at the summit ended up in the wrong valley & had to get a lift back by minibus !
Despite (or perhaps because of) all this I would reccomend this race, 10 miles, up the hill, along the summit ridge and back down. None of it is too steep, and until Sunday I would have said no difficult navigation !

Fan Y Big. M managed to lose 5 places coming off the top due to a misunderstanding re the exact position of the summit marshal (I think he thought he would be somewhere else, although I'm not sure why he though the summit marshal wouldn't be on the summit - no doubt he could elaborate on this at length). Hence he had to go back on himself, lose 2 minutes, therefore the 13th place instead of 8th. He enjoyed it though.
