30/04/2010 by Dick.
Syd visited Eric today and reports that he’s now back at home after a brief spell in hospital. It seems he had a mild stroke, and beside a bit of memory loss, he seems back to his normal self. Syd delivered a get-well card signed by many Harriers on Thursday evening.
The Week Ahead 26 April 2010
26/04/2010 by Dick.
Most of the Tuesday sessions this Summer will be on the track, but we’re offering the Thornwell Loop as one of the options this Tuesday because of its popularity and its use by many members as a benchmark of training progress. The track session will be 8X2minutes with 2 minutes jog recovery.
We’re resuming our acquaintance with the jolly old Gloucester Way on Thursday. Seems like the best part of a year since we last trod this venerable trail. In fact it is the best part of a year since we…
And don’t forget that May’s Club Champs race is next Monday – the Blaisdon Bluebell Blunder 10k, 11.30 am from the Red Hart, Blaisdon, just off the A48 before Westbury-on-Severn. Leave Leis Ctre 10 o’clock.

Anyone fancy their chances in the East Wales Track & Field Champs in Cardiff on Sat 8 May.
I know there are one or two Harriers who can sprint, jump and throw, and the 3k would suit our distance runners. Don’t think you won’t be good enough. Often the leading times are surprisingly attainable.
And we’re talking all age groups from U13 to senior athletes. No separate vets/masters categories alas, but all ages are welcome.
The closing date has been extended to this Monday 26 April, so just time to get your entry in. Do it via me, Dick, if you like. Call on 01291 627569, or email or PM on our Bulletin Board.
Club Handicap –22 April 2010 - Race 1
23/04/2010 by Ivan.
(Results posted here on the blog - will appear properly on the website in due course - Ivan)
A good spell of dry weather helped make the course fast and the evening pleasant. Conditions seemed very good, and the surface was less rutted than in the past.
41 runners ran on the night (a great turnout, thanks). First home was Dave Andrews, followed by Dan Holland who has recently joined the club, with Geoff Bayliss in third place.
Very good times on the night included Tom Gibbs who ran 28.42 (12 secs off Calum’s 2007 record, I’ll put a bet that the record might go this year!!!). Paul Murrin ran 29.36. Sam Harris was the fastest lady in 33.13. I believe there were several PBs on the night. Well done!
The full results are on the attached sheet. As you can see the first runner gets 50 points etc, and the number of points in the two best races will be counted at the end of the series to find out the overall series winner.
In addition this year the handicap series counts towards the Club Championship, so I have attached a list of the runners in time order.
My very grateful thanks to all the helpers: James to helped with the initial handicapping and saved me a long job, Brenda who set up the course, Syd and Jane Rymer who did the start and finish, Suzie and Roberta who helped organise the starters and took names at the finish, and Lou with the children who seemed to turn up all around the course to cheer us on and everyone else who came to spectate!
The next handicap is on Thursday 6 May, at 7.15pm.Vanessa

A nice pyramid session on the track on Tuesday, or for those recovering from the slight undulations of MynyddTroed, an easy run round Piercefield Park. Pyramid distances are 400/600/800/1200/600/400 (4k in total) with an easy jog recovery.
All up to Chepstow Park Wood on Thursday for the first Handicap of the season. First off at 7.15. Please share cars as parking space is very limited. See the Club Handicap page for details.
Anyone interested in a Cotswold Way run on Saturday or Sunday? A good chance to get to know one of the relay legs. Only a couple of months to the big day on 26 June.
Social Note – have you seen on the Bulletin Board under Social Whirl the mention of the local band Major Tom appearing at the Severn Bridge Club in Bulwark? This is looking to be an entertaining Club occasion.

Chep Dominate on Hot Troed
18/04/2010 by Dick.
Here’s the report that’ll go on Welsh Fell Running website:
Chepstow Harriers, whose Club Championship it was, provided 37% of the field, but their leading man Paul Murrin couldn’t stop Mynydd Du’s Martin Shaw from repeating last year’s victory.
A very warm Spring day with a slight but refreshing breeze may have accounted for the slower leading times: that of Martin, 63.32, was a full seven minutes short of his record, while leading woman Helen Fines, at 74.47, was also four minutes behind her record.
First M40 Crispin Flower was well placed in 3rd, just two places above first M50 Pete Gardner. Les Williams, leading M60, was also well positioned in the top half.
The experienced women also placed well: Sharon Woods taking 2nd and Chepstow’s Vaness Lawson and Niki Morgan in 4th and 5th.
The category winners kindly donated their prize money to their chosen charities with the result that the Wyeside Arts Institute in Builth Wells and Greyhound Rescue West Of England will share the total entry fees of £171.
The race ‘organiser’ is very grateful to the magnificent support team – Louise & Carys Blackmore, Kay & Martin Lucas, Hanneke van der Werf, Ian Wade, Gareth Jones - who relieved him of all responsibilities and allowed him to run, in a feeble attempt to score some Chepstow Club points…

The Week Ahead 12 April 2010

Back on the track at last after a long hard Winter, and we start on Tuesday with an Up-the-Clock session. This was introduced to the Club when Rich Matthews’ dad, Viv, visited us in January.
In Rich’s words: The session is set to improve ability to run at consistent pace. The time increment makes this progressively harder and will train the lactic system by developing the ability to work hard when tired.
On Thursday it’s the 3 Woods run, with hopefully enough light to get round without head torches.
And finally, the April Club Champs race is the Mynydd Troed 7 mile fell race in the Black Mountains. You can find out more details, including kit requirements, on this Blog site archive a few weeks ago. A great chance to experience a mountain race with lots of other Harriers.
It’ll be tough, exhilarating, very scenic and something to impress your friends!
We’ll meet at the LC ready to go at 11. Don’t forget to bring the mandatory kit – full body cover, whistle, compass, bit of food, something to carry it in.
