The Week Ahead 31 May 2010
31/05/2010 by Dick.
Rich has come up with a fresh session on Tuesday. It offers some great speed/endurance benefit with five 300 metre bursts off an easy 100 metre jog recovery. There are three sets of five bursts, with a full three minutes recovery between each set. Those recovering from racing at the weekend can alternatively enjoy an easy run over Piercefield Park.
It’s the 3 Woods Run on Thursday except that it’ll have to be 2 Woods plus the footpath alongside Fryth Wood while that area of woodland is closed for wildlife protection.
Then get back and shower by 8.30 for what promises to be a very interesting and beneficial talk by Chepstow Physiotherapy on the prevention and treatment of injuries – with free refreshments! You lucky people! Extra slice of cake for first correct identification of the comedian whose catchphrase that was…
Thanks for Great Rack Raid
30/05/2010 by Dick.
Thanks Fairwater Runners for another brilliantly organized Rack Raid Relay.
On a bright, warm day 14 teams including three from Chepstow Harriers contested the 13 stages. Our A Team finally squeezed the first place trophy in the face of strong opposition from Fairwater and Pontypridd Roadents. And our B Team emerged as winners of the B Team competition. Well done too our gallant C Team.
Stage winners were Jem Cowen, James Blore, Gary Davies, Mark Harvey, Luke Malarz, Nathan Nicholls, Matt Stott and Steve Caldwell.
Thanks to all the members, family and friends who supported the runners, and thanks to Syd in his role as Race Referee. And well done the Team Managers – Mark, Lou, Andy O and Dick.

Good Results in LCL
27/05/2010 by Dick.
Well done everyone who ran in Tuesday’s LCL race. Our men’s and women’s teams both won on the night. As Syd pointed out, even runners who don’t score directly can still contribute by finishing above other club’s scorers.
Thanks to Griffithstown for putting on a good race, and thanks to those members who travelled to support us.
Full results will be up soon.

The Week Ahead 24 May 2010
24/05/2010 by Dick.
Two important events this week dear reader. On Tuesday the first Summer Leisure Centre League is at the Oasis Club (renamed Glan-yr-Afon) in Cwmbran. There will be refreshments afterwards for the presentation of the Cross-Country trophies. Some Chepstow recipients here so don’t forget to stay behind. Meet at LC at 6.30 or follow directions: http://www.chepstowharriers.org.uk/LCLroad.htm
Up the Wye Valley Walk for Thursday’s run.
And then the other important event – the Rack Raid Relay on Sunday. If you’re not taking part, maybe you can find a spare half-hour to support our teams as they pass your neck of the woods. Details on http://www.fairwater-runners.co.uk/Rack%20Raid%20-%20Info%20Book%202010.pdf
Harriers Shine in British Champs
23/05/2010 by Dick.
Chepstow runners made up 3/8ths of the East Wales team in hot Saturday’s British Inter Counties Fell Championships on a tough 9 mile course in the Clwydian Hills.
Lou and Vanessa joined forces with Julie Davies and Sharon Woods of Griffithstown (under Sue Ashton’s managership) to come 11th county in the whole of Britain – a remarkable achievement.
The men’s team of Chepstow’s Rob Gordon, Griffithstown’s Dimitri Vorres, and Brecon’s Martin Shaw and Crispin Flower (manager Dick Finch), also came 11th against the best of Britain.
Another Harrier who made a guest appearance in the British was Brockweir’s own Rob Brown, who was recruited at the last minute to run for the Gloucestershire team!
Handicap 2010 results!!
21/05/2010 by Vanessa.
Well, what can I say? Another handicap series is over. The final handicap was particularly exciting as Tom Gibbs broke Calum Cheshire’s 4 year old course record of 28.30 by running 28.17. Fantastic result Tom, well done! Nailbiting finish as you came round the corner and the clock was ticking, but in the end it was a (relatively) comfortable margin. I am sure the run was anything but comfortable though!!! I believe your first word were along the lines of ‘that hurt!’. I’m surprised you were so polite, really. Not sure I would have been.
Fastest lady on the night was Sam on 32.51. Well done Sam, I believe that might have been a PB according to my records.
Winner on the night was Rob Summers who improved on his previous best run by over 5 minutes, amazing improvement! Well done Rob!
Following a review of the previous two handicaps I have made two amendments to the overall series results:
1. I have revised some of the points allocated in the first two runs. This is because a few ‘inconsistencies’ came to light whereby a small number of runners with what I call a ‘made up’ handicap (as opposed to a handicap based on facts and previous races) ended up with points whereas they should not have done. Anyone with such a handicap has never been eligible to win the trophy on the night and therefore it is unfair to give them points.
2. Likewise people who requested an easier handicap on the night have now been given the points they would have had if they had run the time they did in their original place. It seems to me to be fairer on those who came behind them and who would have got one or two more points had those people not moved starting place.
Let me know if this does not make sense, it only affects a handful of people, but it does have a substantial impact on the results of the series. I am looking to write a set of rules for next year’s series, a job to be done when I have a little more time! Anyone in serious disagreement with what I have done please come and see me and offer to take the 2011 handicap on, thanks.
Therefore our series winner is…Tom Gibbs!!! Interesting I am sure Calum also won the series when he broke the record in 2006, fair enough if you can improve that much and run that fast…
Second in the series is Rob Brown and third John Thomas. Well done guys, you have saved the handicapper the potential embarrassment of coming in the top three, thank you! That would never have done…
The results are below, there are three lists:
1. Results for Thursday’s run.

2. Overall results in time order for the purposes of the club champs.

Thanks to everyone who took part, ran, helped, spectated, jogged round chatting, entertained my children, whatever. I hope you enjoyed it. I did! Looking forward to next year!
