EW champs series, Campus2Campus, 22nd Aug

The next Championship race in the East Wales series is coming up on Sunday 22 August. The Campus2Campus 7-miler follows an innovative route between the two colleges of the University of Wales in Newport, via the old Monmouthshire & Brecon canal and the closed-off historic Malthouse Lane.

The University Sports Centre has asked Chepstow Harriers and the Caerleon runners to provide race expertise and support. You can do your bit by entering the race via http://sports-centre.newport.ac/campus2campus

or by marshalling, or by helping at the finish. There will be a nice goody bag for all helpers.

Please contact Dick Finch for details.

LCL Caerleon - results

Results now online from the Caerleon LCL road race (Llanhennock).  Well done to all.

Women’s team are looking good for the road series win and overall series win as well as individual honours.  Keep it up.

Men’s team, after finishing 4th in the XC league the team have put in strong performances in the Road league and are currently leading the road league by 4 points.  In the overall combined league this strong performance has brought the team into equal 1st place with Fairwater (both on 50 points)….. so it’s all down to the last race.

Final race of the series is Tuesday 17th August, venue is on our home turf.

Good luck all - keep it up.

You might therefore want to bring:

There will be one or two cars available for storage of kit and CAKES (don’t forget them!!!)

The Week Ahead 26 July 2010

Wow – a Tuesday without a race and a chance to get some training in. It’s the last week of Mark Harvey’s reign as Coach of the Month, and he wants us to do some sharp 400’s. 12 in total in three sets.

Then on Thursday Mark has set up a Hash Run, leaving from the Piercefield Hotel just after 7. Free drink and food to everyone who gets to the mystery destination.  It’s about 5 miles and fairly flat so there’s a good chance of getting there before nightfall. So, pretty boring after the last one Mark (and Lou) put on…

The next race in Sue’s Fell Race series is a classic horseshoe run – yes it’s all runnable unlike that precipitous thing that the Chief Coach put on in April. Waun Fach is about 7 miles with some delightful ridge running in the second half and a short sharp finish up to a wee castle.

Starts at 2pm at Pengenffordd between Crickhowell and Talgarth (same as Mynydd Troed) only £2.50, entry on day, and organized by Sue herself (aided by Gerry). It’s an A/Medium race so you do need to wear/carry a windproof top and bottoms, map, compass and whistle, but we’re all getting used to that now. It’s an hour and a quarter’s journey so we need to leave Chepstow by noon.

And then on Sunday it’s one of Chepstow Harriers’ renowned races, the Magor Marsh 10k, organized by Bill Bewg and his team. By now you’ll be signed up to run and/or help. Good luck and fine weather to all!

The Chocolate Brownie Bike Ride

Details for Wednesday’s timed training bike ride are below:

Sign up on start list at top car park of Leisure Centre from 6.45pm.  First rider off at 7.15pm. Others to follow at 30 second intervals.

The start is just over the Racecourse roundabout on the Itton road so once you have signed up for a start time you can head to the grass patch by the Racecourse gates to meet Tom Gibbs who will be timing the start.

The route will be marked by two left hand signs only, one just before Devauden the other on the Usk road after the descent from Devauden.  The finish will be by the entrance to Barnett Woods.  Start and finish will be marked by flour lines.

Please bring your helmet and some cake to be shared after the ride (the cake, not the helmet).  Also ensure you are self-sufficient regarding puncture repair kit and other mechanical matters.

It’s 12.9 miles as measured on my bike computer: 4 miles up and 8.9 miles down.  Some of the descent is fast so please take care. The roads will not be closed.

No drafting please.

Any questions please let me know.  After the ride we can adjourn to a local bike friendly hostelry (suggestions welcome)

Wanted: intrepid people to trek The Big K.  An exciting adventure to look forward to and to tell stories about after.

We have nine definites so far (deposits paid) and a couple of slots available.  This is a self funded event and raising money for charity is not essential but most of the group do intend raising funds for charity on an individual basis.

So if you want to get off the couch and inspire yourself please contact Derek Gibbens (this information has also been posted on the bulletin board, and contact details can be found there).

Thank you, Derek

PS. Last year, we completed the 24 Peaks Challenge with our sister company to raise money for The Mitchemp Trust, a children’s charity.  To view photos click on http://www.justgiving.com/ELCC-24PeaksChallenge/

All About Thursday’s Run

To satisfy the curiosity being shown in Thursday’s run from Redbrook - it’s 5.5 miles and described in the book as a lovely walk by a stream and ponds, along an old valley, through woods and fields, and a visit to Newlands with its magnificent ‘Cathedral of the Forest.’

There’s one hill at the start and one about halfway. The second half is downhill.

Thanks Caerleon For Great LCL Race

Thanks to Caerleon for another well-organised race on the scenic Llanhennock course. Fairwater’s Mark Jennings won, with our own Lou Summers winning the women’s.

The provisional results have Chepstow as winners for both sexes on the night. Well done all the runners who turned out and ran their hardest on a hilly course.

Let’s hope we get another good turnout for the last race in the series at Chepstow on 17 August.

The Week Ahead 19 July 2010

Ooh look, it’s the Leisure Ctre League again on Tuesday! Don’t they come round quick? This one’s just north of Caerleon at Llanhennock. Meet at the LC at 6.30.

Following some marvellous performances at the Rose Inn, our ex-Improvers will be joining the team. They’re a fine bunch the 2010 Class!

A new away run on Thursday based on Redbrook with a drink after. Be at the LC ready to roll by 7.

And finally, on Sunday at Monmouth is the 2nd race in the East Wales Champs – the Kymin Dash (doesn’t matter if you missed the first one at Brecon, as it’s best 3 out of 4). Starts at 1.50 to fit in with the Carnival. You can enter on the day, or pre-enter via
