Run the Railway Path - Your Help Needed

Many members will remember the campaign a couple of years ago to convert part of the old Wye Valley Railway line into a safe path for walkers, cyclists, wheelchairs, horseriders and so on. The support and funding are in place, and a new planning application has been submitted to Monmouthshire and FoD councils.

Our committee agreed then to support the plans, and the time has now come to put all our weights behind the application.

You can help hugely by registering yourself on the campaign website

http://www.wyevalleycycling.org.uk/

So far 996 local people have done so, and reaching the magic 1,000+ mark will show the planning authorities the amount of support behind this terrific opportunity.

Then if you could follow the guidelines and write to your council, you will have done such a lot towards making this marvellous idea a reality for all Harriers and their families.

The Part Week Ahead

Sorry dear Reader, I could have sworn it was Sunday yesterday, and thus I thought I still had a day to post the Week Ahead.

Anyway I can report that tonight’s (Tuesday’s) session of 40 minutes of tempo running round the field was very popular and hugely enjoyed by all. Well everyone looked happy when it was over… Great to see some of Monday’s Machen Mountain runners having the energy to run on Tuesday as well.

So just Thursday to tell you about, and that starts off with the Three Woods, followed by Rogerstone Grange, up the fields to Pen-y-Parc on the St Arvans/Devauden road, across the fields towards Gaer Hill Farm, and then down the hill to St Arvans and back. Or cut it short by turning right onto the road at Pen-y-Parc and running back via St Arvans.

The Week Ahead 23 August 2010

Members from the Tutshill area – no need to run over to the Leisure Ctre on Tuesday! We’re doing Ivan’s Windmill Hill session in the field over the road from the Castleton Home.

And Vanessa invites everyone to take their mountain bike to Chepstow Park Wood on Wednesday at 7pm for a timed ride round most of the paths we ran round a couple of weeks ago. The route has been improved by substituting an easier section for the rather technical last descent we finished on in the recce.

On Thursday we’re running the freshly cleaned-up Nun’s Walk route. If you did Mark’s Hash recently, it’s almost the same route in reverse, but without the Piercefield Inn. It goes round Barnets Woods, out along the dead-end lane that forks off right part-way up Ticken Hill, through the tunnel at Wellhead Lodge under the Usk Road, along the cleared Long Orchard, through Howick Farm round towards Rogerstone Grange, and back.

Finally a reminder that it’s the August Club Champs race next Monday the 30th. The Machen Mountain 10k does go up and down the mountain, but it’s all runnable, and there’s a tasty buffet afterwards.

Leisure Ctre League - Final Results

Another good LCL season and combined cross-country/road year, and may we thank the LCL Organising Committee for a very successful and popular competition, and all the clubs for their friendly rivalry and hospitality.

Congrats to all team and individual winners.

White Horse Relay Sun 5 Sept

It’s time to get serious about our two teams for this new venture. It’s a new relay that takes in all the ancient white horses carved across the Wiltshire chalk hillsides. The ancient trackways are full of history and there’s some beautiful countryside: http://www.whitehorserelay.org/

We need 7 – 10 runners for each team. Each team runs 14 stages in total, so atleast four members of each team run two legs, which range from 1.9 miles to ten.

So far we’ve got Lou, Gill, Vanessa, Berta, Becky C, Sue, Gerry, Mark, Dick, Colin, Andy O, James, Andy S and Laurie down, so a few more needed, especially women.

Only 2 ½ weeks to go so ring Dick (01291 627569) or Lou (01291 625073 – back from hols on Sat 21st) ASAP!

LCL - Simply The Best!

A big thanks to all the marshals, finish officials, water suppliers, course markers and supporters who made tonight’s LCL race such a success.

And thanks to Martyn and Jeanette Jenkins of Fairwater who organize the series and produce the results so miraculously swiftly. I had the provisional results before midnight, and they show that Chepstow managed to just clinch top spot in both women’s and men’s results. Griffithstown ran them close in both, while Parc Bryn Bach and Islwyn were third.

The LCL has been going winter and summer for what must be well over 20 years now, and is I think the most important event that we take part in. The races provide such good regular competition for all levels of athlete, but equally importantly are marvellous social occasions and a chance to get to know and make friends with runners from the other clubs.

Long may they continue!

The Week Ahead 16 August 2010

Tuesday brings the final LCL race of the summer series here at home in Chepstow. Jog up to the hospital crossroads and turn right into Mounton Road where we do our Hospital Hill sessions. Get your race number from Syd if it’s your first ever LCL Race – summer or winter.

On Thursday Berta has arranged an away run at Yorkley in the Forest of Dean. It starts and finishes at the Nag’s Head pub, and is easy to find by heading north up the A48, and turning left at the top of the hill that leads down into Blakeney. You pass through Viney Hill and look for the pub at a left turn. Postcode is GL15 4RX. See the map via this link http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=GL154RX&spn=0.0005,0.12&hl=en

Share cars at Leis Ctre up to 7pm.

Then on Sunday at 10.30 is the next race in the East Wales Champs series – the Campus2Campus race from Allt yr Yn uni campus to Caerleon Campus. Advance entry is recommended, but you can enter on the day. Details including the bus transfer on: http://www3.newport.ac.uk/docstore/r/njones06/Runners%20Information%20′10.pdf

You may have heard my plea for runners and MARSHALS for this event. We’re desperately looking for at least one more marshal (goody bag and transport laid on) to help this important race to be viable. Please contact Dick if you can help.

The Week Ahead 9 Aug 2010

The final Rose Inn on Tuesday so we’re putting on a speed session on Thursday as well as a run. It’ll be 3 sets of 4X300 metres.

The Thursday run will be round Chepstow Park Wood, but a very different run to the usual Handicap route. Vanessa has devised a run that we’ll be testing out for a possible mountain bike route to be cycled on maybe Wed 25 August. It’ll be a roughly 5 mile up-and-down run, and we’ll make sure no-one gets left behind.

Meet at Leis Centre 6.50 to share cars.

And finally – the next fell race in our Club series, the Sugar Loaf on Saturday, 11am from Abergavenny Leis Ctre. This really is a non-technical 7 miler with just a couple of rocky bits around the summit. Enter on the day, only £3, hot showers, refreshments. Meet Chep LC at 9.

Change to August Changes!!!

You won’t believe this and I do most humbly apologise, but I forgot to include the highlight of this month’s programme  - the ‘Away’ run that Berta is putting on from the Nag’s Head in Yorkley on Thursday 19th August.

It’s about five miles of prime forest trails, and many Harriers will remember the Yorkley Gallop race that was based on the Nag’s Head.

I’ve corrected the Training page, and will be reminding everybody on The Week Ahead.

Changes to August Training!!!

Chris has added some more sessions on a couple of Thursdays to make up for the lack of speedwork over the last two months.

We’ve also re-jigged some of the Thursday runs, and included a run round Chepstow Park which may well be used for a mountain bike course on a Wed eve soon.

So if you’ve stuck on your wall the schedule printed in WotsOn, it needs replacing by the new one on the Training page:-
