The Week Ahead 9 April 2012

Well, a good turnout for the first Bunny Run last Thursday bodes well for the second edition this Tuesday. Same place (St Pierre Great Wood at the top of Ticken Hill), same time (7.15 start – meet to share cars at 6.45, or start jogging from the LC at that time for a good warm up.)

Watch out – the LC closes at 7.30.

Thursday takes us round the 3 (2 really) Woods, with a bit more daylight than the last time.

Then on Sunday we welcome the Welsh Athletics physiotherapist for a fascinating talk on the spine and its effect on your running performance. Dr Liba Sheeran will be in Room 15 downstairs in the LC from 10.30 – 12.30. Don’t miss her: we all thought she was brilliant when she talked to us about running injuries a couple of years ago.

East Wales Road Champs 2012

The four races in this year’s Champs are:

Brecon 5 Miles, Tues 29 May

Rose Inn 4 Miles, Tues 10 July

Magor Marsh 10k, Sun 29 July

Elan Valley 10 Miles, Sat 17 Nov

We would have liked to include a Half Marathon, but to our knowledge there are none in EW.

Best three results to count.

Gold, silver and bronze medals in all age groups.

Bunny Run Starts 7.15 Thurs

If you’re planning to share cars to the Run on Thursday you’re advised to meet at the top of the LC steps ready to leave at 6.45.

Those who’d like to run to the start, remember that you need to allow time to get past the top of Ticken Hill by 7.10 for the prompt start at 7.15.

The Week Ahead 2 April 2012

Chris Rees starts his stint as Coach of the Month  on Tuesday with a new session over in flow’ry Piercefield Park. It’s Kenyan Hills  and it does sound fun.

Then haste back to the Leisure Centre bar for Kit’n’Cake evening. John Wright will have lots of new Club Kit to try on and buy, with home-made cakes to enjoy while you consider your purchases!

Readers are also encouraged to bring along unwanted clothes, running or not, for all to share. Unwanted items will be passed to a charity shop.

And if it’s fun you’re after, then there’ll be furry bundles of it on Thursday with the first of the keenly awaited Bunny Runs. Not only is it a golden opportunity to rack up priceless Club Championship points, but organiser Vanessa will be looking for cute little bunny tails to award cute little prizes for.

It’s a cute little course of two laps round St Pierre Great Wood and comes in just under four miles in total. Meet at LC just before 7 as usual.

And Happy Easter to you dear reader/s

The Week Ahead 26 Mar 2012

British Summer Time and the livin’ is easy! Skip lightly over to Piercefield Park on Tuesday and enjoy a jolly fartlek run among the wild flowers.

And what could be more fun than the annual first day of Spring ramble round the Three Woods on Thursday?

You may have read a couple of weeks ago that the new Usk running club have invited other clubs in the area to join them for a sociable run and barbecue on Saturday afternoon at 4.  At the Usk cricket ground. Would be nice if some Harriers made the journey.

Good luck to all those doing the Forest Half on Sunday: hope your training’s gone well.  Ease off after Thursday and give yourself a good shot at those 13.1 miles.

LCL Cross Country Series Results

The Cross Country season ended on Sunday with the fourth and final event at Rogerstone School -thanks to hosts Lliswerry Runners.
The team events were keenly contested. The Women’s Series top three were Chepstow, Islwyn and Fairwater: Chep edging it by just the one point. Top three in the Men’s Series were Chepstow, Fairwater and Lliswerry.
Among the individual age group winners were Chepstow’s Jane Horler, Joc Dodd, Pete Ward, Paul Dodd and Neil Grant.
Chepstow also had top three placers in Helen Duffield, Vanessa Lawson, Jackie Webb, Jane Bayliss, Matthew Lawson, Rob Hook, Andy Bray and Dick Finch.
The Summer road season’s dates will be announced early in April.

The Week Ahead 19 Mar 2012

The return of the popular all downhill Link Road session on Tuesday. All the speed bursts go with the slope in this ingenious format. Two lots of 1,600 metres/400 metres/400 metres will do wonders for your leg speed!

And on Thursday be in on the ground floor of a brand new Chepstow concept – the long-awaited Bunny Run recce. In the middle of what will start off as a typical Thursday run, we’ll nip into St Pierre Great Wood and do one circuit of a special 1.5 mile run round the wood.

So a head or hand torch will be a must as it’ll be very dark amongst them trees.

Why would we do this? Well two laps of the circuit will form the new Club Championship race, the 3 mile Bunny Run which will take place on three dates in April: Thurs 5th, Tues 10th, and Tues 17th. Your best performance of these three will be your qualifying time for points in the Club Champs. And you know what points mean?

And on Thurs 26th April we’ll split into teams and have a fun relay round the Run. Costumes on a bunny theme will also mean prizes!

Wow – what a week ahead!

Invitation to Social Run

We’ve had this kind invitation from a new club in Monmouthshire:

‘Hi Chepstow, I am the chairman of the newly formed Usk Runners. We are having a social all comers welcome training run on Saturday 31st March 4pm at Usk tennis / cricket club.

Choice of 5 or 6 mile - further if you want. Safety signs and marshals will be used.

We pride ourselves on social running: this is our 1st anniversary run .

Bar and BBQ after.

Brian Jones

Kit’n'Cake New Improved Date!!!

I’m afraid the organiser of the Kit n Cake night has had a senior moment and booked it for when she’s on holiday.

Therefore, this evening event will now take place on Tuesday 3 April after training - same venue, approx. 8.30 pm - Leisure Centre bar.

Please come and see the exiting range of Chepstow Harriers’ garments on offer from our lovely John Wright. We might even get him to model some of them.

Homemade cake will be supplied, and the usual range of enticing beverages will be on sale from the LC bar.

If you don’t want any kit, just turn up for the free cake and to chat to your mates to brag about your latest PB or to moan about your injuries - your fellow Harriers will be a lot more interested than your work colleagues or family.

Turn up at the next race in a sea of shiny new red and blue and intimidate all other clubs.

Looking  forward to seeing you lovely people there.
