This Week - 28 Oct

Tuesday’s training is the monthly Severn Bridge 5k Time Trial - originally advertised in Wotson as New Estate Hills or 20/20 on S Bridge. Apologies for any confusion.

This will followed by the monthly meeting of the Social Committee. New participants and ideas always welcome. And have you cast your vote for the  11 December pub/restaurant night? - go to Bulletin Board/Social Whirl/Christmas Social Evening NOW.

Thursday is the Mathern Run - always popular.

And Saturday is the November Club Champs - the Sugar Loaf Race based at the Crown Inn, Pantigelli on the Old Hereford Road,  just north of Abergavenny. Only five miles, most of them flat or downhill - honest! The course will be flagged, there are no compulsory kit requirements but bring along a warm, dry top that you can tie round your waist if the weather looks good. And tho’ off-road shoes are favourite, we have been recceing it in road shoes quite effectively. The views from the top of Sugar Loaf are breathtaking and afterwards there’s a nice warm and dry pub to enjoy a drink and free nibbles and swap tales of derring-do. All this for Race Entry Fee £2.50. Meet at Leis Ctre at 12.15. for 2pm start.

Track Extravaganza - results announced

After much swearing at Excel, I’ve finally managed to pull together the results from July’s club championship “track extravaganza”.

This event consisted of 5 different events: 1500m (ish) steeplechase, 1 mile, 800m, 400m and 100m.

A total of 25 men and 20 ladies took part in the “challenging” mid-summer conditions (not quite as warm and sunny as we’d hoped!) and most (if not all) seemed to enjoy themselves taking on the shorter-than-usual distances.

Each race was scored as if it was a normal championship race (so, 50 points for first place and 50 points for best age %).

The “position points” for each of the five events were then added up to give an overall “position in race” ranking. The highest scorer here was awarded 50 championship points, the second placed 49 points and so on. Separately, the same thing was done for “age related points”.

In this way, July’s championship scores are evenly balanced with the other months. There was obviously an advantage in doing all 5 races, but championship points have been awarded to all participants, even if they only did one of the races.

Hope that makes sense.

Anyway, results for each individual race are here.

The July championship scores are here.

Updated tables for the championship race 2008 are here (men) and here (ladies).

Note that Jane and Geoff Bayliss, plus Steve Harris have taken part in all seven races to-date and so have discarded their worst “A” score (since a maximum of 4 races may be included from any category and we’ve done 5 “A” races).

June Championship results announced

Following a huge turnout at the Caerleon Leisure Centre League race (31 men and 14 ladies) the championship scores have been calculated and the league tables updated. See the championship page for details.

Congratulations to Steve Harris and Jane Bayliss who are currently leading the tables as we reach the half-way stage in the year!

Chedworth 10 - Club Champs

From Ivan
For all of us lucky enough to make the April edition of the club champs it all began by waking up to snow in Chepstow – as we all know that doesn’t happen very often and normally means there must be a ‘shed load’ of snow everywhere else! However for once this wasn’t the case, and what there was melted quickly… aaah.
On a personal front I wasn’t running but was happy to dish out advice along the lines of ‘you won’t need many layers, you’ll heat up running!! – no thermals required. Although after walking over to the hall and back to the car – I along with many others were changing thier opinions on this. Except as ever for Lou who stripped off to the customary crop top ready for the start.
Meanwhile – I got my bike out of the car ready for a nice easy cycle to strategic locations to spectate and take photos.
Race started at 11.00 – pretty promptly I believe, first vantage point was at the end of the first road section (after ~1k), by which point the field was spread enough so that cornering appeared pretty accident free. No surprises that Martin came through at this point as the leading harrier – closely followed by ‘Satnav Mark’ and all of the usual suspects thereafter, Sam and Lou had already begun what would become a battle of downhill vs. uphill speed which would change frequently throughout the 10 miles.
Next point was the first road crossing of the race, by which point Satnav had pulled something out of the bag and snuck past Martin (suffering from a chest infection I believe) with Matthew Stott chasing them down, Steve.H with Matthew.L closely in pursuit. Lou had pulled ahead of Sam, Pete.H chasing Becky.M, Gerry.A pushing hard to stay in front of Sue.A (carrying an injury I believe – sorry Gerry) with further battles still going in the field, Dave.A closely pursuing Geoff.B with I believe Jenni & Vanessa close behind. (Sorry Jenni for one reason or another totally failed to get any pictures). Oh and of course Grubby and Aunty Mary were having a great battle of wills!
Another road crossing – just after the first (I think) proper hill, steep (and long as I have been told – didn’t look very long to me on the OS map!) – Grubby & Matthew I know you’ll be saying they weren’t hills – mere inclines! Everyone was looking a bit slower at this point but looking forward (if they were aware) to a long downhill section through woodland. Titanic battle … – Sam had forged her way past Lou on the uphill section and reached the road just in front, this must have changed once again in the following downhill.
Then they had a good long downhill section – which must have been pretty quick as I didn’t quite have time to get to the next point to see the leading Chepstow runners passing through the ‘river’ crossing (ok it’s not what we’d normally call a river – living by the Severn & the Wye). I guess the photo’s will speak for themselves at this stage. I believe this was probably at about the 6/7 mile mark with a few more hills en route back towards the finish.
All in all a great day and good performances all over and enjoyed by most (I think), as ever the women out performed the men picking up prizes in SL 2nd (Sam.M), FV35 1st (Becky.M), FV40 1st (Louisa.S), FV50 2nd (Sue.A), FV55 2nd (Jane.B) and the Women’s team prize. The Mens team were as ever well represented by Syd picking up MV70 1st, and despite the lack of other individual placings managed to secure the team prize as well.

Forest of Dean Half

It was a wet race. Not too much rain but certainly wet under foot. I think this affected some more than others. With 28 men and 13 women from Chepstow running it was a good turn out.

The event started late and the results were a disappointment, as despite using chips there was a “technical difficulty” and the results were from gun to finish. This lost me 25 seconds and no doubt others lost more. Other than this, the race was well marshalled and once past the first mile I didn’t find it too busy.

I had a good run. Ignoring a nagging injury worked this time and it didn’t affect me during the race. The pacing strategy worked with a faster second half, more than the effect of the hills. I was pleased with my result.

Another factor that made it good for me was that in the race were lots of family members - a total of 11 family and partners. I was soundly beaten by both my son and daughter. All good fun.

The Championship Results have been published using the new scoring system.

Magor Marsh 10K practice

A cold day dawned and 59 runners, plus a few hardy marshalls, gathered at Undy FC for the practice running of July’s new club race - Bill Bewg’s Magor Marsh 10K. The sun shone brightly (though not particularly warmly!) on the pancake flat course - oh, and the slightly undulating last kilometre too…

For a number of the club, this was the culmination of several weeks’ 10K specific training and all were focussed on their personal time targets (after the group warm-up and huddle).

Some fine racing and performances followed, with the field led home by Martin Pengilly, just breaking the 36 minute barrier. Next in was Mark Harvey, in a new PB time of 37:02 followed by Richard Matthews (37:21). First lady was Kath Matthews (8th overall) in 38:39 followed by Sam Mulligan (41:03) and Lou Summers (41:41). Amongst the many great efforts, special mention goes to Suzie Shepherd and Jenni Bell who both broke the magical 50 minute barrier for the first time, commiserations (but a hearty well done) to Jane Bayliss who just missed the target by four seconds. Perhaps in July??

Many thanks to Bill and his helpers for putting on a fine race - I for one am looking forward to the re-run on 20th July (which will be the East Wales Championship 10K for 2008).

Mayhill Massacre

The first Club Championship race of the year was a testing event. The 8.5 miles or thereabouts was muddy and tough. I wore my Garmin and this told me a few things. The overall distance was close but the mile markers were nowhere near accurately positioned (the 5 mile marker was at 6 miles). Also, the height gain was recorded as 1200ft, a bit more than the 900ft advertised. It is good to get more for your money!
There were a good few Harriers out there. Follw this link to find the results. Mayhill Massacre Website I heard Paul Murrin was 2nd - a great result. Sorry I couldn’t stay to any prize giving but even in the mild for January weather Iwas getting cold.
My run was good for the first 5 (or was it 6) miles but then I struggled. Well beaten by Sue again.
A good, and well organised event, living up to its name.
