The Week Ahead 9 May 2011

Very simple week this one, dear Week Ahead reader. Or dare I hope there’s more than one? Unlikely…

Rose Inn Tuesday.

Handicap Thursday – start 7.15.

Good luck if you’re doing either. Thanks if you’re helping.

LCL road 1 & Handicap 2

LCL results (provisional) from the first road race are on the LCL road page

And if you haven’t already found them, the Handicap results from the second race last week are also online on the handicap page

The Week Ahead 25 April 2011

An excellent opportunity on Tuesday to improve your leg strength and speed, and your hill technique in races. We’re over in Tutshill to do the Windmill Hill sessions.

It’s the usual one minute up/one minute down format: but here’s the special bit – you run the first 30 secs with high knees and arms, and then the coach’s whistle will signal you to change your style to shorter, more economical strides in a way that, as in a racing, gets you to the top of a hill with the least effort and in the best shape to push on.

So the session gives you a combination of the hard driving style that will benefit your leg and body strength, and the economic race style that will improve your race efficiency.

Then on Thursday come to Chepstow Park Wood for Round 2 of the Club Handicap Series. See if you can improve your Round 1 time, and impress the Rack Raid selectors who can be mighty influenced by a good Handicap performance. Start at 7 this time as the evenings get longer.

Then come on down to the Fountain Inn just a mile away in Trellech Grange for a post-race drink and bite. Last time they had a quiz on as well.

Handicap 1 start list

Race 1 Start list   here it is.  See you all Thursday.

Remember, first runners off at 6.45pm for this one.  All the other ones will be at 7.15pm.

The Week Ahead 28 March 2011

Did you race at the weekend or do a hard run? You may care to run at an easier pace in this Tuesday’s session on the Link Road. Think about stepping down a group.

We’re doing 800 metres down, then two lots of 400 metres back up with appropriate recovery periods. Try three or four sets.

Great news! The first Club Handicap on Thursday – first runners off at 6.45. See ‘Club Only Events’, then ‘Handicap’ for more details.

We’re going off to the pub after for a drink. In the past we’ve been to the Fountain at Trellech Grange or the Cherry Tree at Tintern, but we’re not sure if either of these is open at the moment. If anyone knows can they tell us all in a Comment below please?

First Handicap race, Thursday 31 March, from 6.45pm

It’s that time of year again!!!! The first handicap is on next week!!!

The rules have changed slightly this year in that if you have not done a race before the handicap and therefore your time has to be ‘guessed’, then as well as not being eligible to win on the night, you will also not score any points for the series.  Also, if you decide on the night that your handicap is too hard you will also not score.  Please therefore do try and do this Thursday’s time trial as that will give us a suitable starting point for you.

As usual I need a handful of helpers on the night.  Brenda has kindly offered to mark out the course with flour so I need 3 or 4 helpers to do the start and the finish times.

If you are available to help could you therefore please reply to this post.  Thank you very much!!!!

XC - Gwent league date amended (Sun 13th Mar), the cancelled race is not being rearranged.

Club champs - Provisional race information added to the club champs page, also included is a document with more detail on the races.

Handicap 2010 results!!

Well, what can I say?  Another handicap series is over.  The final handicap was particularly exciting as Tom Gibbs broke Calum Cheshire’s 4 year old course record of 28.30 by running 28.17.  Fantastic result Tom, well done!  Nailbiting finish as you came round the corner and the clock was ticking, but in the end it was a (relatively) comfortable margin.  I am sure the run was anything but comfortable though!!! I believe your first word were along the lines of ‘that hurt!’.  I’m surprised you were so polite, really.  Not sure I would have been.

Fastest lady on the night was Sam on 32.51.  Well done Sam, I believe that might have been a PB according to my records.

Winner on the night was Rob Summers who improved on his previous best run by over 5 minutes, amazing improvement! Well done Rob!

Following a review of the previous two handicaps I have made two amendments to the overall series results:

1.       I have revised some of the points allocated in the first two runs.  This is because a few ‘inconsistencies’ came to light whereby a small number of runners with what I call a ‘made up’ handicap (as opposed to a handicap based on facts and previous races) ended up with points whereas they should not have done.  Anyone with such a handicap has never been eligible to win the trophy on the night and therefore it is unfair to give them points.

2.       Likewise people who requested an easier handicap on the night have now been given the points they would have had if they had run the time they did in their original place.  It seems to me to be fairer on those who came behind them and who would have got one or two more points had those people not moved starting place.

Let me know if this does not make sense, it only affects a handful of people, but it does have a substantial impact on the results of the series.  I am looking to write a set of rules for next year’s series, a job to be done when I have a little more time!  Anyone in serious disagreement with what I have done please come and see me and offer to take the 2011 handicap on, thanks.

Therefore our series winner is…Tom Gibbs!!!  Interesting I am sure Calum also won the series when he broke the record in 2006, fair enough if you can improve that much and run that fast…

Second in the series is Rob Brown and third John Thomas.  Well done guys, you have saved the handicapper the potential embarrassment of coming in the top three, thank you!  That would never have done…

The results are below, there are three lists:

1.       Results for Thursday’s run.

2.       Overall results in time order for the purposes of the club champs.

3.       Points results for the series.

Thanks to everyone who took part, ran, helped, spectated, jogged round chatting, entertained my children, whatever.  I hope you enjoyed it.  I did!  Looking forward to next year!

Vanessa

Last handicap on Thursday at 7.15pm!!!

Provisional start list is below:

 handicap-3-start-list.pdf

This is a busy week with the Brecon 4 on Tuesday (East Wales championship race).  Therefore I will give people who race on Tuesday an extra 20 seconds at the handicap.  The emphasis is on race, not jog round please, otherwise it’s not fair on those who run their legs off on Tuesday.  My decision is final on this matter.  Final start list will therefore be published on Wednesday.

Don’t forget it’s also a club championship race so even if you can’t do the handicap series this year it is still worth it to get championship points.  I can also babysit children etc if that encourages you to run.

As usual if your name is not on the list don’t panic, just turn up and a handicap will be given to you.

PS I am trying to locate the owner of the black fleecy gilet left at the last handicap.  It is a man’s top, but so far my investigations have proved fruitless. I will bring in on Thursday.
