LCL Risca - Race3 - Tuesday 30th June

Report by Matt Creed

A first for running LCL races but I’m fairly sure won’t be the last, circumstances had meant I wasn’t able to run the previous ones this year and as the Risca run is 5 minutes from my house I didn’t think there would any real valid excuse for not turning up. As a local to the area I suppose I could say I should have the upper hand in knowing the route as I run it several times a week, but the hill back up from under the motorway to fourteen locks doesn’t get any easier no matter how many times you run it, especially when it is hot! A really enjoyable race, with a bit of everything thrown in , a nice bit of uphill at the start and then a good long section downhill before onto the canal, taking care not to swallow to many flies.. Short but steepish climb back up the canal to fourteen locks and then a last mile or so of flat to the finish. As far as scenery goes, you can’t really fault this one. Nice bit of support at fourteen locks on the way down and back from Lliswerry runners who weren’t running in this and nice to put some other harrier names to faces before and after the race and some good banter with some of the other club’s. Great organisation from Islwyn running club and credit to Mike for another great race, (they only seem to do races with hills… still looking for calves after the Sirhowy challenge a few weeks ago.)

Looking forward to Caerleon which Dick assures me is flat, but this is Wales, land of Hills and Valleys,….

Thanks for a great report Matt,  well done to everyone who ran, especially the ladies …. again.   Come on boy’s this is getting embarrassing - but at least everyone made the start on time… that’s an improvement.

Provisional results can be found on the Fairwater Runners website

Next Race is Caerleon - 28th July - pop it in your diary now.  Keep your eye on the blog nearer the time for a meeting time, at the website should hopefully be updated soon with the location  http://www.chepstowharriers.org.uk/events.htm

Griffithstown LCL – Late-Comer’s Lamet - Tue 26th May

This was my first Griffithstown LCL and one I’ll probably not forget! We got to the Oasis club ok and in plenty of time. A good Harriers turn out, despite it being half term, and a lovely evening for a race. But that’s where it all went a bit astray.

I warmed up with three team-mates (who shall remain nameless in case there‘s the slightest chance word hasn’t got round absolutely everyone yet!!) through the park, in the opposite direction to the race. But, with 5 minutes to go, we suddenly realised we were some way from the start. By 7.30 we were careering along at 6-minute pace and, turning a bend, found the race, led of course by Mark, coming the other way!! Ooops! No point in hiding our faces – four Chepstow vests kind of gave it away!

So, having already run 2 miles at a good pace, we had to run past the pack, back to the start, and with no time to set my watch, turn and start chasing. It was like a mass club handicap, except we were the only ones that had been held back. It proved hard work chasing the tail, but once among the main body of runners, I was able to maintain a good pace and steadily move through the field.

Running through the park (the second time for us!), Chris Rees reminded me of the hill round the next corner. Thanks Chris, because it was a long and tough one (for me). I tried to keep a steady, short pace all the way, but really started flagging in the last 50 yards. Helen was running well – I’d been 10 or 15 yards behind her before the hill, but I couldn’t make up any ground until we rounded the corner at the top.

I now had Andy O in front, but try as I might, I was losing ground on him. Coming round the bend by the Oasis, we had a welcome cheer from the Chepstow support (thanks). By now I’d not passed another runner for some time and concentrated on maintaining my position. Not knowing how far we had to go, I tried to dig deep and keep going. I finally managed to catch Andy, but only because he was suffering with his hamstring(?) and had to pull up for a few seconds.

We ran back through the park (for the third time!) and I managed to move up a couple more places. With the end in sight, I watched Dave Somersall first get passed by two other runners, but then change down a gear to take back the lead and fend them off at the finish – well done Dave. I came in 10 seconds or so later.

I guess all four of us scored, but with no results out yet, we don’t whether the lost time counted. I’m looking forward to the Risca race, but I think I’ll warm up running on the spot on the starting line!

LCL Series Road Race - Chepstow May 5th

Race Report by Leo Cohen

I got to the start line healthily dreading what was to come. I was glad to see that no one else in the know seemed too pleased either. The weather was fine – a little cool, but well suited to hard work ahead.

There was a good crowd at the start. It was a relief to start and the first mile flew by. Then there was Ticken Hill. Predictably, a stream of people surged past me. The joy at reaching the top end was short-lived as the pace picked up again. The cheering marshals helped keep my spirits up on the way round – thanks to the Wrights, Mark English and all the others.

Things slowed a little on the A48, but turning back into the lanes, cheering marshals geed me up again and I managed a good pace back to Mounton. When I got to the bottom of the hill, I employed a Runner’s World strategy – look down and pretend it’s flat – this was fine until I realised I’d almost slowed to a standstill.

At the bottom of Hospital Hill, I recalled numerous sprints and decided to have a go, but there was nothing left – I desperately needed to walk. Literally 2 steps into it, I got a teacherly shouting at from Dave so managed to start running again and found the last bit of energy to get up the hill and across the finish line.

I’m glad that the next race on this course isn’t for another year!

Well done to all those who ran, there were far to many for me to remember.  We just wait now with baited breath for the results.  When they become available they will appear on the events page of the website :  http://www.chepstowharriers.org.uk/events.htm

LCL Summer Race Dates

ALL Club members are encouraged to take part in the Leisure Centre League series. There is no limit to how many runners turn up and run. You get a free race number from Syd and just run any or all of the six-mile Tuesday evening road races as you fancy.

There are age group prizes if you run at least four out of the five races, and you can score points towards the inter-club competition.

The first race will be at Chepstow on Tues 5 May at 7.30.

Then 26 May at Griffithstown Oasis Club.

30 June at Risca (canal run).

28 July at Fairwater, Cwmbran.

18 Aug at Bryn Bach Country Park.

The eight competing clubs include a new member - Ebbw Vale.

The Week Ahead - 2 March 2009

Geoff Bayliss is managing this month’s coaching and we start with the opportunity to take part in our new Kenyan Hills session on the lower St Lawrence estate just the other side of the A466. This is a 40 minute steady state run that takes in the up and down slopes of a not very steep hill. Ideal preparation for Sunday’s cross-country!

Alternative is 6X800 metres with 400 mtr jog recovery. Perfect training for improving your 5k pb on the Bridge in a couple of weeks time.

A choice on Thursday of the Mathern 7 or the Shirenewton 9.

On Saturday there’s a marvellous offer from Gill and Andy Stott to have a go at Orienteering at a beginners level. It’s in the Forest near Soudley, not that far from Blakeney, and advice will be readily availabe. Gill is even offering the loan of, and training in the use of, a compass which is all you need. Contact me if you’re interested in sharing cars.

The final LCL cross-country on Sunday morning at Rogerstone, just off M4 Junct 27 for the deciding races. Club Captains Lou and Mark are keen to hear from you. Injuries and absences are depleting our XC pools. Please let your Captain know you can come, and then meet at the Leis Ctre at 10. Your Club needs you!
