Sunday Cycle Ride

Will be doing a taster type ride this week, around 20 miles, very steady. Heading for Thornbury with a coffee stop, 9.00am meet at St Lawrence Roundabout - back in Chepstow by 12.00.

Going forward:

The taster ride will be the last thing I organise before Christmas. Will resume after the festive period with the focus on longer steady state group rides with a bit of a training bias. Will provide you with some details during December. A few of us are meeting in December to have a look at how we take things forward and whether there is a desire to develop the group approach into a club. Will let you know how this goes.

Best wishes

Paul

Sunday Bike Rides

Our cycling friend Paul James is organising some more rides:

Sunday 6 Nov
Alongside the “advanced style” group ride that meets at 8.30 at St Lawrence roundabout, I’m also proposing (if there’s enough interest) to run an “intermediate” style ride also departing at 8.30 from the same location. This will be around 30 - 35 miles in length run at a similar pace to the ride we did to Usk a few weeks ago (remember that beautiful sunny morning?). Looking at a route around Pilning and Thornbury, hopefully with a coffee stop. May be one or two climbs but the major part of the route is flat, aiming to be back in Chepstow 12 - 12.30

Sunday 13 Nov

Two group rides “advanced” and “intermediate”, both leaving at 8.30 from St Lawrence roundabout. Full details to follow.

Taster Rides
Hoping to run one more taster ride before the year end, probably in early December and hopefully with some kind of festive theme. Full details to follow.

Chepstow Cycle Group News

There is no organised ride this coming Sunday. I have suggested a set meeting time of 8.30 for the regulars starting this week. I’m not around this Sunday so can’t give any guarantee about the pace or distance.

Will plan some more rides over the weekend for the end of Oct/beginning of Nov and will let you have details of these as soon as I have them

October - December is traditionally the close season for cycling and rides tend to be steadier and lower in distance especially this side of December with the emphasis on social/group riding. I will reflect this in the rides that I set up but will include some longer ones from time to time. Distance then builds gradually from December onwards in preparation of the start of a new season towards the begining of March.

Happy for anyone to contact me if they need some more details.

Sunday Cycle Rides

Dates for organised rides in October below. I have given some outline details of the style of ride and will confirm these nearer the dates for entry on your blog.

02.10.11 - Intermediate style ride around 35 miles at a steady pace, possible down to Usk via Shirenewton and back up over Llangwm. Usk would be a good re-grouping point and a half way staging point if any riders wanted to go on and get some extra miles in, I will take participants back to Chepstow from Usk. This would be a similar ride in style to the one that we did around Newport, Redwick and Bishton in August but with more challenging terrain.

Proposing to meet at 9.00 at St Lawrence, back in Chepstow around 12.30 - 13.00

09.10.11 (provisional date at this stage) - Group ride, looking to head out to Frampton on Severn with a coffee stop somewhere on route. Looking to use the Sustrans routes around Oldbury to get out to Frampton. This would be edging towards the 50 mile mark in terms of distance again with a steady pace.

Proposing to meet at 8.30 at St Lawrence

This Sunday’s Bike Ride

Paul Allen, the organiser of the bike rides that some of our members have started to join in, has sent us details of this Sunday’s ride:

The plan is to go over the Tumble from the Abergavenny side.

Meeting at St Lawrence Rd (the pull in near the main round a bout) at 8.30 am. It’s about a 60 mile round trip, wouldn’t anticipate that we will be back much before 1.00pm especially if we allow time for a cafe stop.

The climb of the Tumble features in Simon Warren’s book “100 Greatest Cycling Climbs - A Road Cyclists Guide to Britain’s Hills”. He scores it 7/10 and describes it as “One of the most feared and frequently raced climbs in Wales. The Tumble offers an excellent challenge to any rider”. He gives some stats for each climb, the Tumble has a height gain of 399m and is 5100m in length.

Please give me a call or drop me an email if you need any additional information.

Sunday Cycle Rides

Some of our members have been joining in a steady friendly bike ride on Sunday mornings. The organiser Paul James has asked us to post the following info:

Sunday 28.08.11

Propose a group ride towards Newport, heading back home along the flat quiet roads around Redwick, Bishton and Magor. The terrain is predominantly flat with only a couple of steepish hills (Parkwall and Pewllmyrick).

Distance around 35 – 40 miles. This will be a steady/moderate paced (not fast) ride suitable for a reasonably conditioned rider with a good endurance base or who undertakes a mix of running/cycling

Should any riders wish to get in some “additional miles” there are good options on reaching Caldicot on the return leg. From this point the hills around Shirenewton and Devauden are easily accessible.

There are also plenty of points along the route where riders could turn back should they not wish to complete the full ride.

Meeting point and time: Telephone kiosk on St Lawrence Road, located just off St Lawrence Round-a bout. Aim to meet at 9.00am departure by 9.10.

Sunday 04.09.11

A shorter taster type ride similar to the one that we ran to Thornbury recently. This ride would be good for novice riders, riders who are perhaps returning to cycling and possibly still building conditioning or existing cyclists who would like to try a group ride for the first time.

This will be a nice steady ride, probably with a coffee stop. Terrain will be predominately flat, distance between 20 – 30 miles

Meeting time 9.30, location as Sunday the 28th.

Sunday 11.09.11

A hilly challenging ride, 50 - 60 miles in duration heading out towards Abergavenny and taking in either the Abergavenny to Roockfield Road or the Llanfoist road and heading to Bleanavon via the Tumble. I would describe the terrain on both routes as very challenging especially the Tumble Hill which is 3 miles in length and very steep in places. Both routes are more suited to a well-conditioned and experienced rider.

Meeting time 8.30, same location as Sunday the 28th.

——————————————————————————————————————————–

Ian Hutchinson and myself have discussed options for running a second group on a Sunday so that we can offer a shorter steadier paced ride each week for new comers and novice cyclists and something of a longer faster paced ride for more established cyclists. It’s possible that we will be able to get this up and running alongside the rides on the 4th and 11th. As soon as Ian is back from his French trip we’ll put our heads together.

Harriers Star at Orienteering

Our very own Dave Andrews shot round the hills, lanes and tracks of Hewelsfield today to snatch the super vet prize at the end of season North Gloucestershire Orienteering Event.  Well done Dave!  Mark Harvey was proud to punch 11 controls in one hour, dispelling the myth of ‘Sat Nav’ and Steve Harris ran so fast he didn’t have time to stop and punch some of them.   Coachy took to the map with ease and enjoyed a saunter round with a friend whilst Lou allowed herself to be led up a few garden paths by a well known local Harrier who assured her he knew every nook and cranny in the district…

Highest scorer of the day was a local who nobody knew – an M50 sporting an OMM top who arrived late then cleared the board. Must encourage him to join the Harriers – we could do with some more fast M50s.

Matthew L managed to get an often empty push chair round an obstacle course whilst Reuben and Seth ran ahead  faster when they learned of a possible prize, which they won.  After the race Coachy led the way in the cake eating contest, winning hands down (or full).  Many thanks to Lou, Rob and Vanessa for helping to clear up afterwards.

Well Done Tom Gibbs at World Champs

Thanks for the support folks,Back from a long hard race in Spain. We didn’t manage to retain our title, but did finish a solid 6th. Race took 114 hrs with not a lot of sleep. I seem to have also lost nearly 3 kg’s in weight at the same time !Highlights were the fantastic mountain ranges up to 2500m with big rocky spires and a cracking in-line skate up an 11km, 700m of ascent road climb.Roll on curry night - methinks a deluxe curry should do as a starter……tom

Mountain bike training ride

A reminder that Wednesday is the next event in the cycling ‘training series’, the off road training ride.  Meet at 7pm at the Handicap car park in Chepstow Park Woods.  The course is not suitable for hybrids/cyclocross bikes, but there is nothing to stop you bringing them and just riding on the fire trails avoiding the technical bits. Bring mountain biking friends if you like!

It will be a mass start rather than split times.  The hills will soon spread people out.

Adjourn to local pub afterwards for a swift half (or whatever).

Any questions please ask.
