Welsh team brilliant in Barcelona

Report in Welsh Athletics:

”Think of Barcelona and, if images of sunny walks down the Ramblas spring to your mind, think again.

The Welsh team travelling to Catalonia for the Barcelona Half Marathon endured snow and sub-zero temperatures and had to battle the elements on the way to achieve some great results.

The Welsh women saw Katherine Matthews and Emma Parry, who both had babies 12 months ago, come back to form and finish 6th and 8th. Matthews celebrated her first Welsh vest this way.”  Full report http://www.welshathletics.org/news/february-news/welsh-team-brilliant-in-barcelona/

D.Dance Slave Auction for Haiti by Niki

An enormous thank you for everyone who contributed to the auction last night. It was a huge success and raised £1300 - and that’s without Rob Brown’s party bus to and from the venue. How much did this raise Gill/Rob? People were extremely generous with offering their services as ’slaves’ and people were even more generous with their bidding. I’m sure alcohol helped! A very big thank you to Andy Creber – our auctioneer for encouraging people to bid as highly as possible – and generally for doing such a sterling job. The highest bid was £180 – for Berta’s painting services. Clearly the credit crunch has ended in Chepstow. I’m sure certain ladies in the audience appreciated the oiled up, loin cloth clad slave – certainly Esther and Jane participated eagerly. Good girls!

Below are the services offered, and the amount they went for at the auction. One very important detail, that wasn’t mentioned, is that everyone who successfully bid for a service and didn’t pay last night (and that’s everyone except for James, Mark, Tom Gibbs, Neil and Gill), needs to send me a cheque for the relevant amount, made payable to the British Red Cross, or give me the cash – cheques are preferable. Please either hand these to me at a training night, or post to:

As an alternative to the Beachley run there are a  group doing an off road run in the snow.  If you have a head torch or can run by someone who has one this should be fun.

Leisure Centre Shut at 8p.m.

The Leisure Centre is shutting at 8p.m. tonight.

Chris Rees has recce the Mathern run and found it very slippery - he has recommended the Severn Bridge as an alternative although the link road is also icy.

It will be icy tonight so if you do run take care.

Tintern Hash Run 10.30 Sunday 20th Dec

As promised - the Hash will start from the car park 200m past the Royal George - from Chepstow into Tintern - turn left at the Royal George.  As Dick has said:

And finally, one of the year’s highlights on Sunday - our Christmas Hash put on by the Tintern mafia: Dave Andrews, Paul Christie and Rob Barker! Starts at 10.30am and features the numerous paths criss-crossing the Tintern woods (here’s your chance to see them in daylight!).

Seasonal prizes for winners,  a special prize for the best Christmas fancy dress, and free food and drink to every runner who gets to the finish wearing at least one Christmas tree decoration. Bring all your family - secret short cuts will be revealed to under 11s and over 14-stoners! - but even to do half the route they must be capable of covering at least 3.5 hilly, muddy miles in about 1.5 hours. Not suitable for buggys I’m afraid.

Starts at the car park we use for Offa’s Orror overflow, 200 metres along the road to Trelleck from the Royal George hotel in Tintern. Ready to run 10.30.

Fell Series Final Report - by Gerry

This inauguaral year of the Chepstow Fell Series attarcted nearly 40 Harriers, and the competition was tight right to the last event. The final race - Sugar Loaf - was the decider for the series winners, both men and women. James needed a good result to seal victory, and despite injury he stood up to the challenge and came away with the championship. Matthew ran as hard as he could, but not enough to hold onto his lead. Well done both, only 12 points to separate them.
Following these were Andy, Andy & Andy - all within an 18 point spread.
The ladies title went to Gill, beating Sue by a mere 3.29 points. Sue had the consolation of beating Gerry, again by a close margin. Watch out - if he can stay fit…
There were a few late arrivals to the series. Paul Murrin had some very high scores in the last 2 races.
Both Niki and Esther joined half way through the year. I can see 2010 being a bit of a battle, particulalry with Lou and Vanessa involved. They will all struggle though if Marianne decides to commit to the series. They will follow in her wake!

We hope you all can make it to the Presentation in Monmouth on Sunday 22nd November. Meet at Monmouth leisure centre at 10:30 for a choice of training runs: flat along the river, or a recce of the Kymin Winter Fell Race route. For a fee you can shower at the leisure centre then back to the Ashton house (Prospect House, Prospect Road) for a bit of food and the prize-giving. All welcome, but try to let us know if you are coming.

Plans are being drawn for the 2010 series. See you all on the hills.

Help Wanted for Cardiff Half 18 Oct

The organisers of the Cardiff Half Marathon have put out a plea for volunteers to help at the start and finish. They’re expecting 11,000 runners, and polite but firm adults are desperately needed to help get the runners lined up and away, and then to greet and give out goody bags and so on at the finish.

This might be the ideal job for partners, relations and supporters who will get an interesting slant and view of the runners.

Please contact me if you’re interested - 01291 627569.

Chippenham Half - 13th Sept 09

Report by Laurie - thanks.

From the published results 9 runners from Harriers took part with 4 men & 5 ladies competing. Conditions were very good with a 9.30am start avoiding the hottest part of the day with the slightly chill air being warmed by a mainly blue sunny sky.

The organisation of the event, from my limited knowledge, could not be faulted, from being clearly signposted shortly after leaving the motorway to the results being printed & on view minutes after competitors finished through to the awards presentation & conclusion. The largely flat fast course was lined with enthusiastic spectators & helpful marshals at many points along the scenic rural route having started & finished close to the Town centre.

Having run my first ever race in March this year my biggest issue has been pacing myself so as not to finish races close to exhaustion of hospital proportion. Running with Harriers, joining Andy Green on his marathon training & the purchase of a Garmin sports GPS have all helped to temper this a little. This was my most ‘controlled’ effort to date but still meant a drop off in pace in 2nd half of race whereby I could only watch as people of all ages & gender cruised by. Ultimately I was chuffed to do 1:27:52 beating my only other mark in this distance by over 4 minutes this having been during the Llanelli waterside event in the typhoon season earlier this year. Beating my 90minute target was hugely pleasing.

Andy G. was pleased with his time & like myself enjoyed the whole event, this being part of his build up to his next marathon in Jersey. Bill Bewg got in well under 2 hours beating nearly half the field many of whom may have been not far off half his age, for which he earns my respect!

As a ‘newby’ I know nothing of the other Harriers performances relative to their own expectations but hope they enjoyed the event as much as I did.

My special thanks to Brett for offering & providing the wheels & company on the day along with Bill neither of whom I had met until 7am that morning. I would recommend this event to everyone it was exceptional.

Battle of Sedgemoor 10k - Sun 29th Aug - By Matt

Marianne and I travelled to deepest, darkest Somerset on Sunday to run the Battle of Sedgemoor 10k. This was one of the only races which both of us have run recently, and household bragging rights were up for grabs.

The basically flat course attracted runners from all over the South West and Wales, and a cool day with only a slight breeze led to some quick times. The high quality field was led home in 31 mins 15, with the leading lady finishing in an excellent 36:50.

I had a good run: the course had one or two slight rises in the first mile which after I’d negotiated I pushed on in the flatter second half to come home just behind the leading lady and nipped under 37 mins. Marianne ran an excellently judged race to achieve her aim of getting under 40 mins for the first time.

And the best bit: the race memento of matching his and hers purple towels now stocked in our airing cupboard.

So for anyone looking for something to do next August bank holiday, a well organised and supported race with plenty of potential for PB’s.
